What Conscious Living Really Means

Updated: Jan 3, 2020

Consciousness is defined as "being aware of and responding to one's surroundings."

We can all agree that living consciously improves our personal well-being, our relationships, our environment, and our businesses.

With that in mind, we've put together an article to help define what conscious living really means and how it can shape your day-to-day decisions.

1. Personal Awareness

When you become aware of the thoughts you have, the words you speak, and the decisions you make, you become empowered to understand how your behavior affects yourself and others around you. You learn that you are valuable, that you have worth, and that you have been created for purpose. It includes treating yourself with kindness, gratitude, respect, and nurture. It also helps you become mindful of the areas in which you can grow.

2. Relational Awareness

When you become aware of the relationships you have, the way you connect with others and how others relate to you, you become empowered to understand people better, how to respond differently in different situations and how to manage difficult situations better. You become aware of others' perspectives, opinions, and choices, and how they are all interwoven in our connections. You also learn what boundaries to put in place to protect your relationships.

3. Environmental Awareness

When you become aware of how your decisions affect the environment, you become empowered to make better choices regarding the products you buy, the way you use the products, and how you discard waste. It includes choosing zero-waste products and products that have been sourced from local, sustainable, environmentally-friendly sources as well as reducing your footprint on natural resources such as water and energy.

4. Corporate Awareness

When companies become aware of their employees' wellbeing, they can implement procedures to increase wellbeing, foster greater productivity and creativity, and reap the rewards of an engaged workforce. When businesses become aware of how their systems, products, and waste affect the environment, they can implement strategies to reduce their footprint on natural resources such as energy and water.

We can all make strides to become more aware of how our decisions affect ourselves, our homes, our businesses, and our communities. We can all play our part in reducing waste, making use of sustainable natural resources, and only purchasing products that adhere to eco-friendly values.
